The staff at the Walton Centre in Liverpool are dedicated to providing a world class service in the diagnostics and treatment of both injuries and illnesses affecting the brain, spine, peripheral nerves and muscles. With a catchment population of approx. 3.5 million, the Centre draws patients from Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, the Isle of Man and North Wales. In addition, due to an international reputation in some areas of expertise, referrals are received from other geographical areas of the UK.
A more accurate and secure way of working
The Walton Centre had already moved away from analogue technology, but had a need to update their digital dictation devices to more secure recorders. The Centre chose the Philips Pocket Memo DPM8500 voice recorders, which offer 256bit file encryption, PIN-code access and USB mass storage protection to prevent unauthorized use and data transfer. The Pocket Memo’s USB mass storage protection prevents the memory card being used as an external USB storage device. If files are downloaded onto the dictation device, they are automatically deleted once it is removed from the computer. In addition, the Pocket Memos had an integrated barcode scanner, with the ability to scan off paper and screen, rather than the add-on scanners the Centre had been using.
The Walton Centre coupled the Pocket Memos with Philips SpeechExec software to efficiently manage the dictation and transcription workflow process between clinicians and admin staff. The clinicians particularly favoured the integrated barcode scanners, linking patient data to a recording file, as an important time-saving benefit. The easy incorporation of the Pocket Memo into their existing IT systems meant that staff were able to quickly replace their previous recorders with the new Philips digital devices with no hassle or delay. The Pocket Memos were user-friendly and intuitive to use, which enabled the staff to help their patients faster and with the utmost care.
